Anglers weigh in for good causes as Lovell-backed fishing event nets over £22,500 for charity

A fly fishing match organised local housing developer Lovell and supported by Anglian Water raised more than £22,500, a sum that will benefit five charities.

The event was masterminded by Lovell’s London regional director Michael O’Farrell and the team at the Foresters Arms in New Bradwell, Milton Keynes, which was also the venue for the post-event prize giving celebration and barbecue.

Held at Grafham Water in Cambridgeshire, the boat pairs match saw 80 participants taking to the water for a fun day’s fly-fishing, with two-person teams – a novice paired with an experienced angler – fishing from each boat.

The match and auction raised £22,554, surpassing the £7,300 total shared by a number of charities when the event was last held in 2014. This year, more than £9,000 will be presented to Save the Children with money raised also pledged to the Willen Hospice in Milton Keynes and Milton Keynes Hospital’s Little Lives Appeal, which is raising funds to redevelop the hospital’s neonatal unit. In addition, the top three teams on the day nominated their preferred charities to receive the balance of the proceeds raised with these charities including the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Cancer Research UK and again, Save the Children.

“Everyone had a fantastic day’s fishing followed by a great evening at the Foresters Arms, so to have raised such an incredible amount for our nominated charities into the bargain is brilliant,” says Michael O’Farrell. “We set ourselves a tough target to beat the 2014 total, but with the support of everyone who took part and our generous core sponsors, we’ve surpassed our goals and are thrilled to have such an incredible sum to present to our chosen good causes. I would like to thank everyone who took part – we had anglers and novices from all over the UK, including members of the England international team and also the Netherlands professional fly fishing team, who travelled all the way from Holland to support the event and helped make the day such a success.”

The winning team were Paul Haskey and Daniel O’Farrell with a winning catch of 11 fish weighing 25.1lb closely followed by Charlie Abrahams and Jimmy Dolan finishing in second and Pete Webb and Jamie Catterall placed third.

Housing developer Lovell was the main sponsor for the event which was also sponsored by Anglian Water; the Foresters Arms; Eagle Aid; Call Print; Abbey Developments; Blu-3 (UK) Limited; Coinford Construction; Chine Brickwork & Development; Jordan James Electrical; Buxted Construction; Kaybridge; Ingleton Wood; Stanmore; Taylor Wimpey; 1st Class Brick Work; Europtical International and Goody Demolition.
