Members of the public are being invited behind the hoardings at a major Cardiff housing development for a unique insight into one of Wales’ biggest urban regeneration programmes.
Cardiff-based partnership homes developer Lovell will welcome visitors to The Mill, Canton, this month as part of the national Open Doors initiative which aims to promote the construction industry more widely and encourage young people to consider construction as a career.
On 20, 21 and 22 March, the company’s team is organising 40-minute tours of the large-scale development off Sanatorium Road in Canton, where a new riverside community of 800 homes is transforming the site of the former Arjo Wiggins paper mill.
The new housing includes 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association - for the Tirion Group who are developing the site in partnership with Lovell. The Mill scheme is going ahead with support from the Welsh Government and financial backing from the Principality Building Society.
The Open Doors event will include the opportunity to see homes at different stages of construction as well as view the three outstanding show houses which have recently opened. Visitors will be able to talk to the site team, watch the skilled workforce, including bricklayers and carpenters, and look round the busy site office, which is the hub for the entire project. They can also find out about the apprenticeships and other training opportunities which form a major part of the development. Six young people are currently undertaking apprenticeships at The Mill, either with Lovell or the subcontractor firms helping build the homes. Lovell will also recruit 15 apprentices across South Wales and the South West this year through its commitment to investing in local communities.
Lovell regional training advisor Darryl Williams says: “We’re really excited to be giving people a chance to go behind the scenes at The Mill, meet members of our team and find out about the extensive planning and hard work which goes into a new homes development of this scale. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to visit if you’re considering a career in construction or if you’re thinking of buying a home here. The event is entirely free, but visitors must book in advance. The show homes and marketing suite at The Mill are open seven days a week, from 10am to 5pm at The Mill, Canton, Cardiff CF11 8DH. Alternatively, to find out more, please contact the Lovell sales team on 02920 606 766 or go to www.themill-canton.co.uk
