Newport pupils design their own signs calling on drivers to go slow!

In Road Safety Week 2016 (21 to 27 November), signs specially designed by pupils are going up outside St Andrew’s Primary School in Newport calling on motorists to slow down.

Housing developer Lovell – which is building Pobl Group’s major new housing scheme, Loftus Garden Village, close to the school – held a competition inviting children to create ideas for the eye-catching signs.

The winning entries – with messages including Please drive slowly and Slow down – have now been made into colourful permanent signs and installed by Lovell outside the school in Corporation Road.

Lovell community liaison officer Bernadette Vickery says: “We’ve been working with St Andrew’s Primary as part of our involvement in the local community in Newport where we are helping deliver affordable housing provider Pobl Group’s new Loftus Garden Village development.

“The school wanted to get the message out to drivers on the very busy main road going past the school, as well as to encourage the children to think about their own safety as pedestrians. We picked out the most striking designs and the finished signs have real impact.” Lovell also presented the school with £100 of book token vouchers.

Deputy headteacher Dawn Brown adds: “The children enjoyed taking part in the road safety awareness competition and it was a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding near schools.”

Loftus Garden Village is a development of 250 homes near to St Andrew’s Primary. The £30 million housing development will create a modern garden village, with tree-lined streets, close to the city centre including homes for open market sale, shared ownership, social, market and intermediate rent.
