Stroud District Council was facing a housing shortage. No new council houses had been built in the area for over 30 years and some of their existing homes were no longer fit for purpose. They were looking for a partner to support their five-year, £15 million programme to provide the area with high-quality affordable housing. In 2013 Lovell were appointed to deliver their new 66-home scheme at two neighbouring sites in the ancient Cotswolds market town of Minchinhampton.
The sites, at Old Common Mews and The Paddocks, were previously occupied by a number of ageing prefabricated concrete ‘Woolaway’ homes. They had been built by the council as a temporary solution to the post-war housing crisis but over the years had fallen into disrepair.
Lovell does this kind of project really well… Lovell has created some attractive street scenes: some of the properties overlook a generously sized green, allowing parents to watch their children playing from the kitchen; and the mix of external finishes incorporates lots of golden Cotswold stone, complementing neighbouring existing properties and the local vernacular very well.
