The developer behind the nearby Roman Heights scheme provided £500 of funding to improve the cycle and scooter storage at the school, to offer enhanced protection from the elements and encourage active travel.
The money was successfully used as part of a campaign by the Friends of Fairfield Primary – the charity that runs the school’s PTA – who work throughout the year to raise much-needed funds that will benefit the school community.
The previous storage solution for bikes was not weather-proof and had become too small in comparison to the number of children wanting to use it, so Lovell offered to help.
Laura Taylor, community engagement manager for Lovell in the North West said: “Lovell is always keen to support local initiatives, and we were more than happy to donate to Fairfield Primary School.
“Encouraging children to get active and ride to school aligns with our own ambitions of promoting sustainable ways of living. After speaking to Becca at the Friends group, we worked to provide funds to support the installation of a larger, more weather resistant shelter in time for the summer term, so even more children and families can enjoy an active journey to and from school.”
Becca Dunlop, part of the Friends of Fairfield Primary said: “The new bike shelter is fantastic and has been so well used since being completed. It is full almost every day and many more children are cycling to school, especially the older ones who can travel on their own. We also have more families biking to school and back together, which is exactly what we hoped would happen. Not only is it a healthy thing for families to do together, but it also reduces the traffic on our roads in town.”
