The event was all about empowering the community to know what to do if they have any concerns with safety.
During the week, Gwent Police Community Support Officers (CSOs), specialist Drug and Cyber Crime Officers, GoSafe Officers and Fire Officers gave talks to pupils of Glan Llyn Primary School on a variety of topics, including road safety, drug awareness, cyber awareness and fire safety. Lovell and St Modwen discussed the importance of health and safety on a large construction site.
All of the information was then shared with residents of Glan Llyn online, and parents and guardians were invited to attend talks on two afternoons, ensuring that every member of the community is appropriately equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to make sure they are staying safe.
Alongside the safety workshops, the pupils learnt about careers in policing and construction, and received a special visit from Gwent Police’s police dogs. Each morning, CSOs Clare Nancarrow and Rebecca Morgan collected children from around Glan Llyn and accompanied them safely to school.
Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said: “We are very proud to have partnered with St. Modwen, Gwent Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, GoSafe and Pobl to host this important event for the residents and children of Glan Llyn. People and community are at the heart of all we do at Lovell, and it was an honour to team up with organisations that share our values.
“Teaching those in the community about safety is vital, and we strive to make our developments places where people can feel happy and secure in their homes. We hope that the people of Glan Llyn feel empowered and informed about how to stay safe and how to ask for help.”
Elise Coalter, regional director at St. Modwen, said: “As the master developer of Glan Llyn, St. Modwen is always pleased to work with our developer partners to help residents learn more about the importance of health and safety, as well as explaining the potential construction careers out there for young people to consider. Events such as this are an important opportunity for our wider community at Glan Llyn to come together and be a part of the transformation of this former brownfield site into a new, sustainable community for South Wales.”
CSO Rebecca Morgan at Gwent Police said: "Child Safety Week was a great success and a real team effort alongside our partners.
"Working with the Glan Llyn community and local primary school is a priority for us. Maintaining close links with people living and working in the area is essential to ensure that we understand any local issues and can deal with them effectively.
"It was a joy working with the school children, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe. They all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience and it was a pleasure to speak to them about the work we do in the area."
Andrew Carbis, Project Manager at Pobl Group, said: "We are delighted to have been able to support our partners for this community event that saw local children and their parents receiving important safety advice that will help keep them safe as they go about their everyday lives. The Locke Gardens development is a flagship scheme that will help strengthen the vibrant local community."
Stephanie King, Deputy Head Teacher at Glan Llyn Primary School, said: “The school community were excited to work in partnership to develop an understanding of the importance of keeping safe within our community and exploring the various careers offered.
“It was wonderful to see the high levels of engagement and I hope this is something that we can continue to facilitate in the future.”
