Meriel Gough, Social Value Manager at Lovell, led five interactive and engaging workshops for more than 300 Year 4 and 5 students. The sessions aimed to introduce young learners to the construction industry and all that it entails. Each workshop began with pupils donning their own child-sized hard hats and high-vis jackets, immersing them in the world of construction from the outset.
The children were introduced to key topics, such as health and safety on a building site and the various stages of housebuilding. They were encouraged to share what construction meant to them, with enthusiastic responses ranging from “building homes”, to “making schools” and “constructing hotels and offices”. Pupils also learnt about different roles within the industry, and many expressed a newfound interest in becoming Lovell Environmental and Sustainability Advisors.
An interactive element allowed students to analyse images of active construction sites, identifying machinery, and discussing each piece of equipment’s function. They also learnt about the importance of PPE and how it helps to keep workers safe on-site.
The sessions sparked excitement when pupils discovered how construction companies like Lovell actively protect wildlife during development. Many were inspired to hear that responsible construction had led to the return of birds and other species in their environment, recognising that nature was thriving in their Glan Llyn community.
To round out the sessions, each child received Lovell-branded merchandise, including highlighter pens, bamboo pens and pencils as a souvenir of a day packed with learning, creativity and inspiration.
Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said: “We take great pride in engaging with such enthusiastic young minds. We were thrilled to offer these sessions to the students at Glan Llyn Primary School, and it’s exciting to see the next generation take such a keen interest in what we do.”
Locke Gardens is being delivered by Lovell in partnership with Pobl. The development will consist of 500 properties, including 286 open market sale homes, 80 affordable homes and 134 shared ownership properties.
The development is part of Glan Llyn – a residential-led development being delivered by St Modwen. The £1 billion regeneration project is transforming the 600-acre brownfield site and creating a major new vibrant community for South Wales, with a total of 4,000 new homes being delivered alongside community infrastructure and green, open space.
