To mark World Suicide Prevention Day (Wednesday 10th September), leading partnerships developer Lovell worked with mental health charity Signposted Cymru, to host an on-site wellbeing session for its construction team at the Elderwood Parc development in Portskewett.

Delivered by charity founder Darren Thomas, the session provided practical advice on how to maintain positive mental health, as well as signposting employees and contractors towards tailored support. In recognition of the visit, Lovell donated £200 to Signposted Cymru to support its ongoing work.

In August, Lovell also welcomed Darren to the St Mellons Community Living Project in Cardiff, where he delivered a three-hour wellbeing session to site staff, contractors and suppliers. The session highlighted practical ways to support colleagues and recognise the early signs of poor mental health, with Lovell donating £500 to the charity.

Signposted Cymru specialises in immediate intervention and support for people experiencing mental health challenges, and offers free, tailored programmes to individuals and communities across Wales.

Lovell has built a strong relationship with Signposted Cymru, inviting the charity to speak across its developments and offices in South Wales and West, as part of its ongoing commitment to employee health and wellbeing. Previous initiatives have included talks during Mental Health Awareness Week, football fundraising events, and donations totalling more than £9,600 to support the charity’s work.

Darren Thomas said: “At Signposted Cymru, our mission has always been to provide immediate and accessible mental health support for those who need it most. World Suicide Prevention Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of early intervention and open conversations around mental health.

“We’re proud to be working with Lovell at the Elderwood Parc development in Portskewett and also at the St Mellons site, giving workers the chance to access support and speak openly in a safe environment. Together, we can break down stigma and ensure that no one feels alone in their struggles.”

Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said: “At Lovell, the health and wellbeing of our employees and contractors is something we take very seriously. World Suicide Prevention Day is an important reminder of the role we all play in breaking down stigma and creating space for open conversations.

“By working with Signposted Cymru, we’re able to provide our teams with practical tools and immediate access to support, which we hope will make a real difference. We are very grateful to Darren for visiting the Elderwood Parc development and St Mellons Community Living Project, and for the ongoing partnership we share with such a dedicated charity.”

Situated on Crick Road, Elderwood Parc consists of 269 new homes and the Severn View Park Care Home, being built as a design and build scheme for Hedyn (the housing association formed by the merger of Melin Homes and Newport City Homes), Candleston and Monmouthshire County Council.

The St Mellons Community Living Project is being built by Lovell for Cardiff Council and will provide high-quality, independent living accommodation for older people. The £17.2m development will deliver a total of 60 one and two-bedroom, self-contained apartments for social rent and a wide range of communal facilities.
