118 pupils of Meadowlane Primary School, from years four to six, received engaging presentations on site safety. The talks came about as the upcoming St Mellons Community Living Project, which we are building for Cardiff Council, is less than one mile away from the school.
As part of the sessions, the children were taught how to identify potential safety hazards and dangers on construction sites. They then had the opportunity to try on hi-vis vests and hard hats, a selection of which were donated to the school following the talks.
We also introduced the pupils to the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), an organisation working with developers to ensure active sites are being worked on safely and in a way that is respectful to the community. The CCS frequently visits developments to monitor all construction activity and score developers against certain criteria, making sure they are being considerate to the community, environment and their workforce.
After its latest visit from the CCS, the St Mellons Community Living Project received a top score of 45 out of 45, highlighting our commitment to maintaining high standards, supporting the community and protecting the environment.
The children from Dosbarth Clun, one of the year six classes at Meadowlane Primary School, said: “We enjoyed learning about all the safety gear that is worn on site and the reasons why they are worn. We learned about many different roles that make up Lovell - both office based and site based. We learned the names of many of the vehicles and machines on site. It was a very useful session.”
Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said: “As the St Mellons Community Living Project is located so close to Meadowlane Primary School, it was important for us to teach the pupils about how they can stay safe. We put the community at the heart of all we do at Lovell, and it was fantastic to see the children so engaged.”
Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at Cardiff Council, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “It’s wonderful to see Lovell once again actively engaging with the community, especially involving local children in the development of our St Mellons Community Living scheme. The new homes for older people, set to be completed by next summer, will greatly benefit the area. I’m sure the pupils enjoyed learning about the project's progress and the crucial importance of safety on construction sites.”
The St Mellons Community Living Project is being built by us for Cardiff Council and will provide high-quality, independent living accommodation for older people. The £17.2m development will deliver a total of 60 one and two-bedroom, self-contained apartments for social rent and a wide range of communal facilities.
