What is an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)?

An air source heat pump, often called an air-to-water source heat pump, is a fantastic way to keep the home warm and cosy. It works by transferring heat from the outside air to water, which is then used to heat the rooms through radiators or underfloor heating. Plus, it can heat water stored in an Atlantic Calypso air source hot water cylinder, providing hot water for the taps, showers, and baths.

This system is not only efficient but also environmentally friendly, as it uses renewable energy from the air. It’s a great way to reduce the carbon footprint and save on energy bills while keeping the home comfortable year-round.

How does an Air source heat pump work?

• CAPTURE

The fan passes ambient air over extremely cold liquid refrigerant. The refrigerant captures the heat from the ambient air and becomes a warm vapour.

• COMPRESS

The warm refrigerant vapour passes through a compressor, raises the temperature and produces hot refrigerant and usable heat.

• EXCHANGE

The heat in the hot refrigerant is transferred to the cold water stored within the duplex stainless steel tank through the heat exchanger, which is wrapped around the outside of the tank, to supply hot water to the property.

• EXPAND

Once the heat has been transferred to the cylinder to heat the water, the refrigerant passes through an expansion valve. This reduces its temperature, making it cold again and enabling it to capture heat from the ambient air, continuing the cycle.
